Otis Bernard Gilkey, known as Bernard Gilkey, was born September 24, 1966 in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a graduate of University City High School in St. Louis and became an undrafted free agent before he was formally drafted to Major Baseball League on September 4, 1990. He is a former player for several teams including St. Louis Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and Boston Red Sox. He is a primary left fielder but sometimes plays right field, too. He batted and threw with his right hand and was also a center field, first baseman and a designated hitter. In 1996, he was traded to New York Mets and had his strongest season that year. He made a batting average of .313 and 44 doubles. He finished fourteenth Most Valuable Player in National League. He also made 18 assists that year. In 1997, his statistics dropped to a batting average of .249. The next year, he became part of Arizona Diamondbacks but was released by the said team in the mid 200 season. He then signed as a free agent for Boston Red Sox. After the 2001 season, he finished his career with a record of 118 home runs, .275 batting average and 546 runs batted in.
