A former American Major League Baseball player, Billy Gardner was born on July 19, 1927 in Waterford, Connecticut. He is a light-hitting second baseman who bats and throws right handed. He had played for the New York Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox. He was also famous for managing the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals. It was on April 22, 1954 when Gardner was signed by the Giants. But then in 1956, he was purchased by the Orioles where the bulk of his career started. He had his best season in 1957 where he led the league in doubles with 36 and at bats with 644. He also batted .262 with 6 home runs and 55 runs batted in during the full 154 games that he could possibly play. He also came up in the top ten in hit by pitches twice. In 1961, he joined the Yankees and won the 1961 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Gardner ended his playing career spending two years with the Red Sox where he picked up 70 hits in 283 at bats. In his ten seasons, he batted .237 with 4 home runs and 271 runs batted in during his 1,034 games played. Gardner also picked up 841 hits with 159 doubles and 18 triples in 3,544 career at bats. He has energetically finished with 19 career steals. He also became the major league coach for Red Sox, Montreal Expos, and the Twins.
