Bombo Rivera is a retired professional baseball player who was born as Jesus Manuel Rivera Torres on August 2, 1952. He hails from Ponce, Puerto Rico and played baseball as early as seven years of age. His nickname Bombo means “fly ball” was given by the manager of his youth baseball team. His professional career started in the minor league system of the Montreal Expos in the 1970 season. He also appeared in the winter ball in Puerto Rico and played for the Mayaguez Indians. He bagged a win in that league particularly in the Caribbean Series in Mexico. Together with Jose Morales , Rick Sweet, Ed Romero and other players, he played a significant role for the team's win in that league. He was then named to the All-Star team that year. His debut in the Major League Baseball came in 1975 when he appeared in five games for the Montreal Expos. He appeared in 68 games for the 1976 season and recorded a batting average of .276. After that season, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins with which he played 101 games and recorded a .271 hitting average. He played for the Twins for 112 games in 1979, which is his highest number of games in his entire career. After his stint in the Major League Baseball, he had another championship in the Puerto Rican League in 1985.
