Burleigh Arland Grimes was a former Major League Baseball Player from Emerald Wisconsin. Known as “Ol' Stubblebeard”, he started playing professionally in 1913 for the Central Association team Ottumwa Packers. His MLB debut was on September 10, 1916 when he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was one of the few last players in the league who were allowed to throw the spitball which was banned in 1920. He joined the World Series in 1931 and played 270 games in nineteen years of professional baseball career. Grimes was able to play for several other teams like the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1918 to 1926, the New York Giants in 1927 and in 1930, the Boston Braves. He likewise joined the St. Louis Cardinals and played for the Chicago Cubs. He spent his last few seasons for the New York Yankees. After his playing career, he managed the Dodgers which he helped to finish as runner-up in the National League. He was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964 and had a career record of 270-212 win-loss ratio, 3.53 ERA and 1512 strikeouts. Among his achievements was the National League strikeout championship in 1921, being one of the few who has five 20-win seasons and being a game leader in four National League championships.
