Known as “The Mechanical Man”, Charlie Gehringer was a Major League Baseball player in the 1920s to the 1940s. He played for 19 seasons for the Detroit Tigers as their second baseman. After being discovered by the Bobby Veach, the then left fielder for the Tigers, he signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers organization and played for the London Tecumsehs in the Michigan Ontario League and then the Toronto Maple Leafs in the International League. In 1926, Gehringer was able to play his first full season for the Tigers. But it would be in 1927 when he became a .300 hitter. He was ranked fourth in the American League after hitting .317 during the 1927 season. In 1928, he finished 19th for the AL MVP voting. He went on to improve his hitting until 1933. Gehringer was able to play in the All-Stars from 1933 to 1938. In 1935, the Tigers reached the World Series and even went on to win. Gehringer won the AL MVP award during the 1937 season. By 1949, seven years after his retirement, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His jersey number—2—was retired by the Tigers in 1983.
