Presently, Gilmour is the head coach for the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. He played for the Cornwall Royals in the same league in 1980. He was instrumental in the Frotenacs' claiming two back-to-back championships. During the 1982 season, Gilmour was named as the recipient of the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy and the MVP. Gilmour was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft but the team was hesitant to sign him because of his relatively small physique. After he was traded to the Calgary Flames in 1988, the team went on to win the Stanley Cup with Gilmour's help, beating out the Montreal Canadiens. Gilmour made the winning goal during the last game. In 1992, Gilmour was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs and was able to score the most points in that season. He scored 127 points, a career-high, and received the Selke Trophy.
