Gene Woodling is a former American professional baseball athlete who hailed from Akron, Ohio who batted with his left and threw with his right and played for twenty long seasons in the Major League Baseball as left fielder for numerous teams in the league; the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates , New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators and the New York Mets. Woodling graduated from East High School in Akron where he was signed out in 1940 by the Cleveland Indians as amateur free agent. Before setting foot in the major league, Woodling spent some time in the minor league affiliates of the Indians and was a four-time batting champion in the minor leagues. Woodling made his major league debut on September 23, 1943. Woodling was perhaps well known during his career with the New York Yankees where he had his best season in 1953. Although Woodling had only 395 at bats at that time, he had led the American League with an on-base percentage of .429. Also, during his career with the Yankees, his team was victorious for five consecutive times in the World Series from 1949 to 1953. He had his final game for the New York Mets on September 16, 1962. Gene Woodling passed away on June 2, 2001 in Barberton, Ohio.
