John Vanbiesbrouck, nicknamed “Breezer,” is a retired American professional ice hockey player in the National Hockey League. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and played as goaltender for numerous teams in the national league; the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers , Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils. He was listed at 5 ft. 8 in. and 176 lbs. When He was fifteen years of age, his father drove him to Sault Ste Marie in Ontario, Canada to try out in the Ontario Hockey League. In 1979, Vanbiesbrouck was able to join the team of Greyhounds of the said league. Vanbiesbrouck became the number one goaltender of the Greyhounds for three years then. In 1981, Vanbiesbrouck made his entry in the National Football League when was drafted by the New York Rangers during the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He was the fourth round pick of the team in the draft. On December 5, 1981, Vanbiesbrouck made his professional debut at the age of eighteen in a match against the Colorado Rockies . He also participated in four International Ice Hockey Federation Championships; in 1982, 1983, 1985, and 1989. He had his last season in 2002 with the New Jersey Devils. In 2007, Vanbiesbrouck was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
