He was picked by the Red Sox during the 2000 MLB Draft. Gabbard went to Royal Beach High School and baseball together with Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Gabbard went on to play for Portland, the Boston Red Sox affiliate in the Double-A. He had a 9-2 record and an ERA of 2.57 after starting 13 games for Portland.
