Before making his way to the Major League Baseball, he played for several Japanese teams which include the Hanshin Tigers which drafted him in 1998. He spent a few years in the minor league systems and appeared in the Central League. The Hanshin Tigers were able to reach the 2003 Central League pennant with the help of Igawa's awesome performance.
