Merton Edward Hanks was born in Dallas, Texas on March 12, 1968. He is a former National Football League player who played mainly as a safety. He is a graduate of Lake Highlands High School where he was known as a track and field star. He moved to University of Iowa for college and played college football at the said university. There, he earned All-Big Ten recognition as a cornerback. According to reviews, he was not quite impressive during the 1991 NFL draft with only 40 yards dash. He was selected by the San Francisco 49ers only at round five of the said draft.
