Juan Francisco Herrera, nicknamed “Pancho”, is a retired Major Baseball League player who served as a first baseman for two teams. He played from 1958 to 1961 for the Philadelphia Phillies and had his best seasons with the team. Aside from the Major Baseball League, he also played in the Negro American League for the team Kansa City Monarchs. He joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1954. Reviews say Herrera was the first of his race, Afro-Latino, to be part of the Philadelphia Phillies. He had his best season in 1960 when he had 17 home runs and posted a .281 batting average. He was the top National League player in strikeouts with 136 and had 13 errors. He was the second among the votes for the Rookie of the Year award. He spent his next years in the minor league. In 1969, he retired from being a professional baseball first baseman. He went to manage a few teams in the Florida State League and the Mexican League. He posted a career record of .271 batting average and 31 home runs. He was a recipient of the International League Most Valuable Player Award in 1959. His final game in the MLB was held on October 1, 1961 for the Philadelphia Phillies.
