Theodore Samuel Williams was a left fielder in the Major League Baseball. He used to play for the Boston Red Sox. His baseball career was sporadic because he had to serve the military as a pilot for the Marine Corps. Williams earned the nickname the Splendid Splinter and he began his professional baseball career in 1939 with the Red Sox. His 1st game with them was on April 20, 1939 against the New York Yankees. He became one of the most dominant southpaw hitters in the MLB, and finished 4th in the MVP race. He competed against the great Joe DiMaggio and DiMaggio eventually won the American League MVP award against Williams. In 1940, he pitched once in a losing game against the Detroit Tigers. He starred in the 1941 All- Star game and made the MLB All- Century Team. He also played spotty at times like in the 1946 World Series game against the St. Louis Cardinals. His last game as a player was on September 28, 1960 against the Baltimore Orioles . Williams ended his career with a .344 batting average, with 521 home runs, 2,654 hits, and 1,839 runs batted in. Upon retirement, he worked as the manager of the Washington Senators from 1969- 1971. He died of cardiac arrest on July 5, 2002. Williams was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame class 1966.
