He plays as a shortstop with the Philadelphia Phillies. On February 4, 1997, he was first signed as a free agent by the team Montreal Expos . He is one of the team's players on the Expos Dominican League Teams from the year 1997 until 1999. After that, he played for some games on minor leagues for the same Expos until 2001. He became a team member of the Florida Marlins when he was claimed off the waivers on March 29, 2002. Shortly after, he was sent to the Marlins Double-A team in Portland. He played for the Marlins organization until the year 2003. In 2004, after he made a record of hitting a .319, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox for Billy Koch . The Sox then assigned him to the Triple-A in Charlotte where he made another record of a .302 hit. He also earned his major league call up in September of the 2004. He made his first home run on September 26, 2004 and his record by then was .233. Other teams that he had played with are Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers, Japan Baseball, and New York Mets. He played with the Philadelphia Phillies on November 25, 2009. He is a reserve in fielder when Jimmy Rollins was disabled. When another player, Juan Castro, became injured, he was appointed as a shortstop. He became the shortstop since then and up to now; he is playing for the Phillies.
