Woodie Held was a professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball. He could play infielder or outfielder while in the league. Held was able to appear in a number of teams in the MLB including the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. Held, whose family name was originally spelled as Heldt, was born in Sacramento, California. During his youth, Held was a batboy for the local Sacramento Solons team. He eventually signed with the New York Yankees in 1951 as an amateur free agent. After playing for the Yankees minor league affiliates, Held was able to make his first appearance in the MLB during the 1954 season. However, he was traded to the Kansas City Athletics together with four other teammates. Held was converted into a center fielder while playing for Kansas City. During his first season of playing for the Athletics, Held was able to hit a total of 20 homers. After a year with Kansas City, Woodie was traded to the Cleveland Indians and played for the team for approximately seven seasons. During the 1963 season, Held was converted from a shortstop to a second baseman.
